EGYPTIAN WALKING ONION
Ancient Garden Extraordinaire!
While relatively new to Shabby Chic Gardeners; this one-of-a-kind Allium (onion) has been around a long time. And yet, here's an interesting fact: this regal onion does not originate from the land of Egypt!
Genetically, Wiki tells us this onion is a cross between a Welsh onion called A. Fistulosum and the common Allium onion. Therefore, its unique attributes are Welsh. So how did it get the name "Egyptian" Walking Onion? This is where the onions history becomes obscure, the folks who actually traded and introduced this phenomenal onion throughout the Mediterranean and eventually to the new America's, where called "Gypsies." And thought the Romans called Egyptian's,
Gypsies and/or Gypsters, both were meant as slang's on their name and possibly trading discourses, added to which the Egyptian's did not refer to themselves by this name.
But, Gypsies originating from India, did and still do call themselves "Gypsies." There are several groups of Gypsies, including "Egyptian Gypsies," yet which group, if not all, to credit the spread of the Egyptian Walking Onion, remains a delectable mystery.
Why is this onion considered phenomenal?
✔It's unique, edible and ornamental.
✔The onions grow on top of the plant.
✔The entire plant from above to below ground is 100% edible!
Purple clustered, rich sweet flavored bulblets sit "atop" a tall hollowed edible stem (taste like a shallot), which is attached to yet another larger and more robust tasting onion
✔ It Walks!
When the marble sized bulbs become to heavy, they pull the top of the plant to the ground which sets a new root and . . . appears as if walking around the garden. To prevent your plant from strolling at will, simply remove the top bulbs.
ZONES: 3+ Very cold hardy. Multiplies and will return every year! (to thin remove onion underground.)
PLANT BULBS: 1" deep in rich compost soil. Keep bulbs cooled and dry in fridge until planting. Plant anytime the ground is workable.
First to arrive in Spring. Harvest bulbs in Fall. Eat from the hollowed stems anytime!
